Description

Very Rare Choice Deep Cameo 1878 Double Eagle

1878 $20 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. A Choice orange-gold representative of this desirable proof issue. The strike is razor-sharp, and features uncommon definition on Liberty's hair tresses. Although not immaculate, the fields do not possess any singularly detracting grazes, and a wispy hairline that reaches the lower right corner of the portrait is described here merely to aid the identification of pedigrees.

A mere 20 proof 1878 Double Eagles were struck, and survivors in any condition are of the greatest rarity. As of (7/04), PCGS has certified only four pieces, and the present Deep Cameo near-Gem is the single finest certified. In fact, it is the only specimen that PCGS has graded either as Cameo or Deep Cameo.
