Description
Slightly Circulated Proof 1895 Twenty
1895 $20 PR55 PCGS. CAC. Only 51 proofs were struck of the 1895 twenty. This particular coin apparently slipped into the channels of commerce and stayed there. One might speculate that a hundred years ago this coin meant more as a twenty dollar gold piece than it did as a proof. The only die diagnostics for these are included in the Bowers book on twenties, where he relates what was observed on the Trompeter piece: "In date, the 1 is about central between bust and border, its left base slightly to the right of center of a dentil." The fields on each side still retain significant reflectivity, especially around the devices. The fields are, however, extensively marked with small abrasions from contact with other coins. The striking details are remarkably strong. Rich orange-gold color throughout.(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26EG, PCGS# 9111, Greysheet# 10092)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
