Description

Magnificent 1895 PR 64 PCGS Double Eagle

1895 PR 64 PCGS. A very rare date among proof twenties, only a third of the original mintage of 51 pieces is estimated to have survived the past century. The devices show a strong contrast against the deeply reflective proof mirrors in the fields. The Philadelphia Mint really peaked out in the 1890s in their quality production. Everything seemed to go just right, the coiners perfected the textured "orange peel" fields and seemed to get the frost on the devices cooked up to the perfect contrast. For these reasons, proof gold from this era is consistently beautiful. In The PCGS Population Report a curious 17 pieces have been so graded, with none graded higher (4/97). One must assume that perhaps a few of the 17 have been submitted multiple times to attempt to be the first 65. In any event, here is one of the most beautiful proofs to be produced by the mint, in the finest state of preservation yet seen.
