Description

Sparkling 1896 PR 63 Cameo Double Eagle

1896 PR 63 Cameo ANACS. Dazzling two-toned surfaces that reveal fewer hairlines in the fields than one might expect for the grade, but a trivial hairline cut between stars 4 and 5 and a tiny hairlined area on Liberty's cheek keep this beauty from choice status. Mint records show that 128 proof double eagles were struck in 1896, but hard times from the Great Depression and the gold recall in 1933 served to cut the number of survivors by at least half.
