Description

1897 Double Eagle, PR62 Cameo
Well-Contrasted Surfaces

1897 $20 PR62 Cameo NGC. Generous mint frost coats the devices, while the reflective fields easily provide jet-black contrast when the coin is tilted. The grade of PR62 Cameo is explained by the presence of numerous field hairlines, more prominent in the lower-right obverse field. They combine with a couple of larger marks, including a sprinkling of contact ticks on Liberty's cheek along with a thin scrape in the obverse field, near star 13. From the original proof mintage of 86 pieces, probably only one-fourth to one-third survive to this day. This piece represents a nice compromise for type collectors between cost and aesthetic appeal. Census: 4 in 62 Cameo, 8 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P2)
