Gem Cameo Proof 1897 Double Eagle1897 $20 PR65 Cameo PCGS. David Akers considers the 1897 Proof double eagle to be the rarest date from the 1895 to 1907 period, which is supported by Walter Breen's accounting. This is not supported by the mintage figures; however, as this issue has the fifth lowest proof mintage during the same period. Akers suggested that between 18 and 22 proofs are known, while Breen claimed 18 to 24 proofs. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify 44 examples; this figure almost certainly includes several resubmissions. Mintage for this issue was a mere 86 coins.
This is an important coin for its very high numerical grade, but is equally important for its aesthetically pleasing appearance. Like all coins, whether they are proofs or business strikes, gold or otherwise, eye appeal or aesthetic appearance is perhaps more important than technical grade. This Gem Cameo proof could arguably qualify as a deep cameo example, with highly lustrous and deep yellow-gold devices and deeply mirrored greenish-gold fields. The fields on both sides have the usual wavy texture of true proof examples. A tiny lintmark extends from the inside point of star 5 and should serve as a pedigree marker for future researchers.(#89113) (Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 26EJ, PCGS# 89113)
