Description
Superb Ultra Cameo Proof 1898 Double Eagle
1898 $20 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Only 75 proof examples were coined, although David Akers estimated that 35 to 40 examples still exist today, a figure that seems a bit optimistic to us. In the Bass Collection catalog, Dave Bowers suggested that "fewer than half survive today." Although pedigree research for proof gold coinage is an extremely difficult undertaking, we believe that a roster of known examples would probably only have about 25 entries. To understand the challenges of the researcher, take a close look at the illustration of this example, and see if there are any individual blemishes that will help to track previous appearances of this coin. While doing so, make certain that the blemish is a trait of the actual coin, and not of the plastic holder. At the same time, consider that the double eagle has the largest physical size of any proof gold coinage, and the problems of pedigree research (especially involving smaller size coins) become immediately apparent. This remarkable double eagle, a Superb Gem in every way, has exceptional aesthetic appeal. Every design feature is fully detailed. Both sides are fully brilliant with deeply mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices, exhibiting heavy mint frosty, especially on the reverse. The surfaces have fully wavy or watery texture, sometimes alternatively called "orange peel" texture, common to all proof gold coins of the late 19th century. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (6/06).
