Description
PR50 Sharpness 1899 Double Eagle
Lightly Circulated Proof Example
1899 $20 --Improperly Cleaned--NGC Details. Proof AU
Details. Only 84 examples of this proof issue were produced,
and the appearance of any example at auction is an unusual event.
This is an impaired proof that someone tried to improve by
cleaning, which has left the fields hairlined, and this piece has a
few contact marks and light wear, apparently from brief
circulation. Wear shows on the tops of LIBERTY and the coronet, and
on the peripheral stars on the obverse. A tiny rim bump appears
below star 13 on the obverse. High-point wear also appears on the
reverse, the wing tops and scroll ornaments.
Note for clients in the European Union: This lot is considered by the European Union to be “investment gold”. We believe that it meets the criteria established in Article 344(1), point (2) of Council Directive 2006/112/EC and thus should be exempt from import VAT regardless of the selling price. Any questions or concerns about VAT should be addressed to your accountant or local tax authority.
