Description

1899 Liberty Double Eagle, PR55 Cameo
Scarce Circulated Proof, Bold Contrast

1899 $20 JD-1, R.5, PR55 Cameo NGC. PCGS estimates 30 to 40 examples of the 1899 proof double eagle survive, while John Dannreuther pegs the surviving population at 40 to 55 pieces. Curiously, the 2025 Red Book reports a proof mintage of 84 pieces, while Dannreuther's count according to Mint records is 74 proofs struck. This example has the unusual distinction of being a circulated Cameo, retaining its strong field/device contrast despite moderate abrasions that define the AU55 designation. Both the obverse and the reverse show isolated reeding marks, suggesting this coin was aggregated with other coins (possibly other double eagles) before being rescued from circulation. Die polish characteristics on the reverse suggest this coin was one of the later proof strikes, with attenuated right (facing) tail feathers and isolated polish within E PLURIBUS UNUM. Vibrant orange-gold color and the sharp proof strike remain intact. About a handful of circulated 1899 proofs exist at PCGS and NGC combined, but only this one with designated Cameo contrast (2/25).
