Description

Well Contrasted 1900 Double Eagle PR63

1900 $20 PR63 PCGS. Collector demand for the 1900-dated proof gold coinage must have risen slightly, as the Double Eagle mintage for this year "skyrocketed" to its second highest level ever, 124 pieces. Based on the number of auction appearances and on possibly inflated certification figures, it seems doubtful that more than 55-60 pieces survive as recognizable proofs. The specimen offered here is impressively mirrored and well contrasted, with tinges of orange patina at the margins. Patchy oil-slick iridescence on either side of the portrait appears to be masking minor disturbances in the obverse fields and wispy luster grazes affect Liberty's cheek. Still, the overall eye appeal of this Select example is very strong and the 21st-century demand for these large gold rarities is unprecedented. Population: 11 in 63, 26 finer (12/04).
