Description

1901 Double Eagle, PR62 Cameo
Substantial Contrast for the Issue

1901 $20 JD-1, Low R.5, PR62 Cameo PCGS. 1901 brought less contrast to double eagle proofs, most of which tend to be brilliant with light lemon-yellow to orange-gold coloration and full strikes. This example displays enough mint frost to receive the PCGS Cameo designation -- one of the few such 1901 proofs with sufficient contrast to qualify. Scattered faint hairlines and tiny marks dot the mirrorlike fields and and account for the PR62 Cameo numeric grade. Deep reflectivity offers flashy eye appeal and the needle-sharp devices are fully brought up to accentuate their smoothly frosted features. Only 96 proofs were struck for the year yielding 40 to 60 survivors in all grades combined. PCGS Population: 5 in 62 Cameo, 14 finer (12/25).
