Description

1902 Liberty Double Eagle, PR62
Low Total Mintage

1902 $20 JD-1, High R.4, PR62 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint switched to an all-brilliant finish for proof coins in 1902, eliminating the richly frosted design elements of previous years. Accordingly, few examples show significant field/device contrast. The Mint struck a small mintage of 114 proof Liberty double eagles that year, to accompany a meager business-strike production of 31,140 pieces. The proofs were delivered in five batches of 39, 6, 8, 24, and 37 coins throughout the year. A single pair of dies was used to strike all the proofs and John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 60 to 80 examples in all grades.
The present coin is an impressive PR62 specimen, with sharply detailed design elements throughout. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces include deeply reflective fields and the devices have enough mint frost to create an unacknowledged cameo effect when the coin is tilted in the light. Scattered minor hairlines and contact marks are consistent with the grade. PCGS Population: 11 in 62, 23 finer (3/26).
