    Description

    Proof 1902 Liberty Double Eagle

1902 $20 PR58 NGC. In his 1977 proof Encyclopedia, Walter Breen gives only one diagnostic for the 1902 Double Eagle: "Date a little above center." There is no doubt in our minds, however, that the present specimen is a proof, as the fields retain much of the brilliant finish despite light rub and an overall scuffy appearance from light handling. Both sides are olive-gold in color with a little light haziness. Only 35-40 proof 1902 Double Eagles are believed extant from an original delivery of 114 pieces. Of further note to specialists is the fact that the business strike 1902 boasts the lowest mintage (31,254 pieces) of all 1893-1907 Liberty Double Eagles.
