Rare Gem Cameo Proof 1902 Double Eagle

1902 $20 PR65 Cameo PCGS. Of the 114 Double Eagle proofs struck in this low total mintage year, recent estimates place the number of survivors at roughly half of the original figure or 55 to 60 pieces. From this tiny group of survivors, most display little or no field-to-device contrast. This eye appealing yellow-gold specimen, set up by deep glassy brilliance in the fields, does manage enough contrast to have earned a rare Cameo designation (one of at most seven coins from both major services in all grades, duplications being likely). A few wispy slidemarks across the portrait only become a factor when viewed under magnification. Population: 1 in 65 Cameo, 0 finer (11/04).
