    Finest Known 1902 Proof Twenty

1902 PR 65 NGC. When thinking of 1902 twenties, not only are the proofs rare, but the business strikes are elusive also as they have the lowest mintage of all twentieth century Liberty double eagles. Of the 114 proof pieces struck, Akers believes that perhaps 35-40 exist today in all grades. This is an intriguing piece. Beginning in 1901 the mint shifted to an "all brilliant, no contrast" method of proofing and virtually no post-1901 coins show any frost on the devices. The fields on this coin have a remarkable depth of reflectivity and there are no mentionable hairlines or surface disturbances. For pedigree purposes, there are two tiny toning spots on the reverse border, one at 8 o'clock, the other at 10 o'clock. A light, milky haze covers most of each side. This is the singular finest 1902 proof twenty dollar piece thus far graded by either service (5/98).
