Description
1905 Double Eagle, PR64 Cameo
Rare With Cameo Contrast
1905 $20 JD-1, High R.4, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. White-gold
surfaces on the design elements contrast with inky black mirrors,
with some polish on the cheek, neck, and eagle's rays. The strike
is full, leaving no detail up to the imagination. An old scrape by
star 13 and a toning spot above the left ribbon serve to identify
this example for pedigree purposes. Eye appeal is exceptional, as
confirmed by the CAC sticker. After peaking in 1891-1892, 1896, and 1900, the certified population of Deep Cameo proof double eagles fell off a cliff as the 20th Century commenced. PCGS has assigned this designation to only one 1907, one 1905, one 1904 and two 1901 double eagles, with NGC adding three 1907, one 1905, and four 1901 certifications to the population. This is compounded by the similar mintages of the aforementioned 1890s dates vs. the 1900s issues, with the exception of the scarcer 1891.
With the near unavailability of Deep Cameo examples, the collector must turn to Cameo coins such as the present offering. While still rare, pieces with this designation exist for all dates. For 1905 double eagles, Cameo examples account for just under one-third of the certified population, with 11 grading instances at PCGS and 10 at NGC. Of these, however, only one-quarter received the coveted CAC sticker, making this an unusual opportunity to obtain this quality coin.
In addition to its rarity in top condition among proofs, the collecting pressure on this year is increased by the dearth of circulation strikes. In 1904, the Mint made a record number of double eagles (6.26 million), making it the most common date of Liberty Head double eagles by a country mile. However, in 1905, the mintage plummeted to 58,910 coins, and survived in lower rates than the surrounding years with similar mintages, making it the rarest circulation strike 20th Century Liberty Head double eagle. Uncirculated examples are also notably scarce, increasing the collecting pressure particularly on non-Cameo proofs. From the paucity of Cameo and Deep Cameo examples to the CAC certification to the lack of circulation strikes, this coin has a home in any double eagle specialist's collection.
