1905 $20 PR64 NGC. Only 92 proof Liberty Head double eagles were minted in 1905, and the survival rate was low for a proof issue. Probably no more than 30-40 pieces survive today in all grades, and Choice examples are very rare. Currently, NGC has certified only seven coins in PR64, with two finer, while PCGS has also graded seven specimens in PR64, with a single example finer (8/10).
The present coin is a delightful Choice specimen, with deeply mirrored fields of unfathomable depth. The surfaces are a vivid greenish-gold color and the devices are sharply rendered, but in the low-contrast finish used by the Mint during this period.. Some light hairlines can be detected in the fields, but no other distractions are evident.(Registry values: P1)
