1906 Liberty Double Eagle, PR64
Rare Cameo Specimen
CAC-Approved Quality

1906 $20 JD-1, High R.4, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The 2026 Guide Book reports the Philadelphia Mint struck a fairly modest production of 94 proof Liberty double eagles for collectors in 1906, and only 69,596 business strikes were minted. However, the monthly delivery records indicate a larger mintage of 117 proofs was accomplished, with the coins delivered in quarterly batches of 42, 51, 3, and 21 pieces. A single die was used to strike all the proofs. The obverse proof die shows distinctive polish and lumps from above the ear down by the curls, making it possible to distinguish between proofs and prooflike business strikes. Although still a rare issue in absolute terms, the 1906 is among the more available proofs of this era, and John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 50 to 65 examples in all grades, while PCGS CoinFacts postulates a slightly smaller total of 50 to 60 examples extant. This suggests the larger 117-piece production total in the delivery records may be correct and collectors may have been more reluctant to sell or spend the proofs because of the small business-strike mintage.

While all 1906 proof double eagles are rare, specimens with cameo contrast are especially elusive. Starting in 1902, the Mint employed an all-brilliant finish on proof coins, abandoning the old frosty devices that provide the cameo contrast with the mirrored fields. A few early strikes from freshly polished dies, like the present coin, have some degree of frosty texture on the devices, but few examples display the kind of contrast seen on coins from the 19th century. At present, PCGS has certified only six coins in PR64 Cameo, with five examples finer (11/25). Deep Cameo coins are unknown at either of the leading grading services, and none have appeared at public auction.

The present coin is an impressive Choice proof, with sharply detailed frosty design elements throughout. The fields are deeply mirrored and the field-device contrast is stunning. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces show only a few minor hairlines and contact marks, and the high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Overall eye appeal is terrific. Population: 6 in 64 Cameo, 5 finer. CAC: 3 in 64, 4 finer (11/25).
