Description
Brilliant Proof 1906 Liberty Double Eagle
1906 $20 PR62 PCGS. Both sides of this lovely proof example have brilliant yellow-gold surfaces with nicely mirrored fields. The reverse displays hints of orange color. The surfaces on each side are lightly marred, consistent with the grade. Although an expensive issue by its very nature, this aesthetically pleasing example should prove more affordable than the few Gem proofs that appear for sale from time to time. Not only is this an important proof issue, from a production of just 94 coins, but the date is also important in business strike format, with a mintage of less than 70,000 coins. Today, most specialists and researchers agree that the surviving proof population is a little over half the original mintage, or between 50 and 60 coins, although many are impaired or otherwise unattractive. Despite its lower numerical grade, the present specimen is appealing and desirable.(Registry values: P1)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26EU, PCGS# 9122, Greysheet# 10125)
