Description
1907 High Relief Twenty, PR61
Struck From a Specific Die Pair and Collar
1907 $20 High Relief PR61 NGC. The existence of
Saint-Gaudens High Relief double eagle proofs have long been
debated among numismatists, researchers, and collectors. The
grading services are inevitably drawn into the conversation. NGC
has long recognized the proofs as being struck from a specific die
pair and an edge collar previous used on Ultra High Relief coins.
PCGS recently identified a few High Relief Specimen strikes, with
their characteristics similar to those seen on NGC proofs. This PR61 example conforms to the NGC characteristics for a proof strike. The coin is housed in a previous generation holder that precludes viewing the edge identifiers, although those were certainly reviewed by NGC prior to the coin's encapsulation. Other proof identifiers are visible on the coin, including:
A heavy die line that runs through the base of the Capitol dome.
Swirling die polish lines in the space between the eagle's wing and neck.
Vertical die lines are visible on the raised rays of the sun, especially on those rays from the eagle's midpoint to the right. To our knowledge, these multiplicitous die lines are unseen on any other High Relief die pair.
A partial wire rim is present on the upper-left obverse edge to about 2 o'clock on the right. As usual, the strike is sharp, although that is not a distinguishing proof characteristic because all High Reliefs received multiple strikes from the medal press. Thick, satiny mint luster adorns this certified proof High Relief, with mellow aged-gold color and a few tiny handling marks that determine the numeric grade.
