1907 $20 Liberty PR61 PCGS. CAC. Proof Liberty Head double eagle coinage in 1907 dipped below that of the previous several years, totaling only 78 pieces. The coins were delivered in quarterly intervals throughout the year, and it is believed that all were eventually distributed to the public. New research by John Dannreuther in United States Proof Coins, Vol. IV, suggests that this final-year issue was well-saved at the time of its release. Dannreuther estimates that 45 to 60 pieces survive. This figure is in agreement with the auction appearance rate of this issue. Including some reappearances of individual coins, we have handled a 1907 proof Liberty Head twenty on only 38 previous occasions, the last being three years ago. This CAC-approved example is in a collector-friendly grade. The strike is fully rendered and modest cameo contrast is apparent on the reverse. Hairlines on both sides determine the grade. Population: 2 in 61, 36 finer; 1 in 61 Cameo, 18 finer; 0 in 61 Deep Cameo, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 61, 1 finer (10/18).
