    1907 Liberty Twenty, PR64 Cameo
    Significant Contrast on Each Side

1907 $20 Liberty PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. After a run of 57 years, the Philadelphia Mint retired the Liberty design from the double eagle in 1907 without much fanfare given to the collector market. On the contrary, the excitement created by the new Saint-Gaudens design may have actually lessened the already limited demand for proofs and a mere 78 pieces were struck, the lowest production of any 20th century double eagle up to this point. Population data would suggest that 45 to 55 specimens survive as identifiable proofs. There are a considerable number of lower grade and even impaired examples known of this date, undoubtedly spent in later decades when twenty dollars represented a significant amount of money rather than a bauble to be held onto during hard times.
This is one of the flashier proof 1907 twenties we have seen recently, a Choice specimen with unusually bold, frosted contrast for a proof gold coin from this time frame. Most proof gold after 1901 lacks any significant cameo contrast, especially as pronounced as seen on this piece. The depth of mirrored reflectivity is excellent and there are no signs of contact or mishandling. Inspection with a glass reveals a small pocket of wispy hairlines to the left of the date and lower portion of the portrait. A small lintmark in the reverse field at 9 o'clock should be useful for attribution. The specialist in high quality proof gold should find this dazzling specimen of considerable interest. Population: 9 in 64 Cameo, 3 finer (11/11).
    Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2006), lot 3938, where it brought $46,000.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 26EV, PCGS# 89123)
