Description

Pleasing 1907 Liberty Head Twenty, PR53

1907 $20 PR53 PCGS. The 1907 issue is the final year for the Liberty Head double eagle. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write that "although the mintage for 1907 proofs (78 pieces) is fewer than for the issues of the previous few years, the number of survivors is about the same, at 40 to 50 coins. There are also several impaired examples known. Most examples also lack the cameo devices commonly seen on pre-1902 specimens." PCGS and NGC data corroborate the number of survivors, as those services have graded about 40 examples to date. This PR53 specimen displays apricot-gold surfaces that exhibit considerable field-motif contrast, especially when the piece is tilted under a light source, and mildly frosted design elements are exquisitely struck up. Minute contact marks are scattered about, somewhat more so on the obverse. Housed in a green-label holder. Pleasing overall eye appeal, despite the light circulation.
