Description

1907 Twenty Dollar Liberty, PR55
Final Year of the Type

1907 $20 PR55 NGC. The 1907 proof twenty dollar Liberty is a little-understood issue. Breen (1977) only says: "Date almost centered; slants up; 'broken nose' as in 1906." This piece certainly meets those minimal qualifiers, but additionally it displays deeply reflective fields around the devices on each side. The fields and high-point devices are dense with small to medium-sized contact marks that impede much of the original mirroring in the fields. The mark that is most obvious is placed horizontally across the hair of Liberty just above the face. The devices retain the strength of detailing one would expect from a proof striking. Only 78 proof twenty Libs were struck in this final year of the design.(Registry values: P1)
