Description

1869 Ten Dollar, PR61 Cameo
From a Mintage of 25 Proofs
Top-Notch Eye Appeal

1869 $10 PR61 Cameo NGC. CAC. NGC has certified a total of eight 1869 proof eagles. PCGS reports another four submissions. These totals, including non-Cameo, Cameo, and Deep Cameo specimens, are unsurprising. The Mint struck 25 ten dollar proofs in 1869, so a survival rate of 12 to 14 examples makes sense. Breen wrote in his Proof Encyclopedia that this issue was subject to "great pressure from date collectors as almost unobtainable in business strike form." That is certainly true of high-grade representatives, which are virtually unknown. Otherwise, the 1869 circulation strike is far more available despite its low mintage of 1,830 coins.

Contrast between the glassy, jet-black fields and fully frosted devices is profound and bordering on Deep Cameo. Wispy lines on each side define the technical assessment, but the eye appeal remains top-notch. Two alloy spots appear within the O of GOD and between UR in TRUST. Certified in a former generation holder. Census: 1 in 61 Cameo, 4 finer in this category. CAC: 1 in 61, 0 finer (1/18).
