    Description

    Finest Known 1869 Proof Eagle

1869 PR 66 PCGS. The ten-dollar gold pieces from 1869 are rare both as business strikes and proofs. Only 1,830 business strikes were produced with a paltry 25 proofs struck. Of that number, Akers estimates that perhaps 10-12 proofs still exist today in all grades, while Breen gives a slightly lower estimate of only 8-10 pieces. The combined staffs of both the major certification services have only seen eight proofs (four each). This is the finest example certified and is undoubtedly the finest known as well. The obverse devices are heavily frosted and show the sharpest contrast imaginable against the unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. The reverse is only slightly less frosted and contrasted. Light haziness surrounds the figure of Liberty like a halo on the obverse, with less of this effect on the reverse. The fields and devices are free from any evidence of cleaning with only the occasional hairline noted, probably from "flip friction." To aid researchers in tracing the pedigree of this impressive coin, there are a series of small planchet flakes noted between star 1 and the end of the bust, another in the field between stars 1 and 2, and several tiny ones around the 4th star. An important 19th century proof coin, and a piece that is sure to garner much interest from the numismatic community. (NGC ID# 28F7, PCGS# 8809)
