1871 Liberty Eagle, PR64 Deep Cameo
Only 10-12 Specimens Extant
Ex: Trompeter
1871 $10 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. This is a date that is very
seldom seen in either business strike or proof format. Only 1,790
business strike Liberty eagles were produced in 1871 and a meager
30 proofs were minted. Far fewer than the original mintage of 30
pieces exist today though. Akers estimated only 7-8 have survived,
while Breen believed that as many 10-12 might still be extant
today. We have identified 10 distinct specimens in our roster
below, two of which are impounded in Museum collections and three
that are impaired to some degree. In any case, the 1871 is one of
the rarest dates in the entire With Motto type as a proof. This is an exceptionally attractive example and the finest 1871 proof we have ever offered. This piece has a tiny planchet flake above the second 1 in the date that can serve as a pedigree identifier. Deeply mirrored, the richly frosted devices create a strong cameo contrast on each side. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout and the vivid lemon-yellow surfaces show only insignificant signs of contact. This coin should find a home in the finest collection or Registry Set.
