1875 $10, CA

Description

Impressive 1875 Proof Ten Dollar Rarity, Ex: Trompeter, Genaitis

1875 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. Like its corresponding business strike, the proof 1875 Eagle is a premier numismatic rarity. Only 7-8 coins are believed extant from an original mintage of just 20 pieces. Although not noted on the insert, this is the Trompeter specimen, and it is identifiable by a small lintmark (as struck) in the obverse field before Liberty's forehead and a series of alloy spots that include a small one on the reverse within the D in UNITED. A few wispy hairlines in the obverse field account for the PR64 designation, but this is still a predominantly smooth example with rich orange-gold color. Deep, coal-black fields form a splendid backdrop to the well frosted devices. Sharply struck, and a fitting complement to the business strike 1875 Eagle that we are also offering in this sale. Also accompanied by PCGS insert 3682284 that confirms this coin's grade by that West Coast grading firm also.
Ex: May 2000 Central States Signature Sale (Heritage, 5/00), lot 7796, where it realized $82,800.
