Description
1876 Liberty Eagle, PR63 Cameo
CAC-Approved Quality
Low Total-Mintage Year
1876 $10 JD-1, R.6, PR63 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The Philadelphia
Mint struck a fairly generous production of 45 proof Liberty eagles
for collectors in 1876, to accompany a remarkably small
business-strike mintage of just 687 pieces. Perhaps the Mint
anticipated increased collector demand for the issue, due to the
nation's centennial celebrations. Despite the relatively high
production total, the 1876 proof eagle is a rare issue today and
the small supply of proofs is under intense pressure from date
collectors, because high-quality business strikes are extremely
elusive. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving proof population
at only 16 to 20 examples in all grades, which agrees closely with
the PCGS CoinFacts estimate of 18 to 22 specimens extant. Two of
those survivors are included in the National Numismatic Collection
at the Smithsonian Institution, and another coin resides in the
collection of the American Numismatic Society, forever unavailable
to collectors. The proofs were delivered in two batches, the first, of 20 coins, on February 19, and a second group of 25 examples on June 13. A single pair of dies was used to strike the proofs, with a number of rust lumps on Liberty's neck that make it possible to differentiate between proofs and prooflike business strikes.
The present coin is an impressive Select proof, with razor-sharp definition on the design elements and deeply mirrored fields that contrast boldly with the frosty devices. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show only minor signs of contact and overall eye appeal is outstanding. The high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. This coin is pictured on PCGS CoinFacts. Population: 1 in 63 Cameo, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 63, 1 finer (11/25).
