Description

Rare 1876 Proof Eagle

1876 $10 PR63 NGC. Although the production of proof Tens increased to 45 pieces in 1876 (from 20 the year before), the number of survivors is very small with only 14-18 pieces believed extant today. Like the Trompeter coin that we handled a couple of years ago, this piece also shows noticeable (although unofficially recognized) contrast between the fields and devices. The grade is derived from hairlining over each side, but there are essentially no other surface blemishes on either side of this important gold proof.
