1877 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. This 1877 eagle, certified PR65 Cameo by NGC, is yet another member of this well-matched complete 1877 proof set, 14 pieces in all, including the minor coinage through Trade dollar (listed under Early Proof Sets), and the five gold proof coins in this Platinum Night auction, all offered as individual lots.
As with the other proof gold coins dated 1877, the eagle was struck in the reported amount of 20 pieces. Today two complete 1877 proof sets survive, one in the Smithsonian Institution holdings, a second in the collection of the American Numismatic Society. Walter Breen reports two deliveries of 10 sets each in his Proof Encyclopedia, one on February 24, one on May 31.
It is likely that less than half of the original mintage survives today, perhaps 10 coins in all including the museum specimens. The 1877 proof eagle is under severe date pressure from collectors of business strikes as well. The circulation-strike 1877 eagles were struck to the memorably low extent of a meager 797 coins, one of the lowest production figures in the entire Liberty Head series. The 1875 eagle had 100 circulation strikes, with the 1876 at 687, then the 1877 at 797 pieces, all incredibly low mintages.
For the proof 1877 eagle, NGC lists only three grading events, one each in PR64 Cameo (the ex: Trompeter coin), PR65 Cameo (this piece), and a PR65 Ultra Cameo. At PCGS, there are two in PR64 -- five submissions at both services combined.
We offered the ex: Trompeter PR64 NGC coin (formerly in the Garrett Collection) in our FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/1999), lot 8239, where it realized $36,800. It came up for auction again in our Columbus Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2002), lot where it realized $39,100 a decade ago. Those are the last auction offerings of any proof 1877 eagle that we can find, more than 10 years ago.
The present piece thus represents a signal chance to acquire one of the finest certified examples of this incredibly rare and in-demand issue. The surfaces are lovely with significant field-device contrast over each of the reddish-gold sides. Close examination shows a few wispy hairlines, and two shallow diagonal slide marks appear on the upper and lower portion of the face of Liberty. Tiny specks of die rust also appear on the face, a trait this piece has in common with the Trompeter coin.
