    Description

1878 PR 62 NGC. Ex: Trompeter. There were only 20 proof eagles minted in this year, making it one of the rarest dates of the With Motto series. We estimate that only 7-8 pieces exist from the original mintage. As one would expect, there are noticeable hairlines on both obverse and reverse, but the eye appeal is much better than one would expect from a PR 62, and this coin is definitely at the upper-end of this grade. There is even light orange toning on both obverse and reverse. There have been only 2 pieces graded by NGC (11/98) and 2 by PCGS (10/98). The proofs of this date are identifiable by a plain hairline joining the inner points of the 8th and 9th stars. There is, also, a curved line joining the B and E of LIBERTY. The reverse is the type of the 1876-77. An identifier for this coin is the slight tick to the right of the 5th star. Population: 1 in 62, 3 are finer.
    Ex: Philip G. Straus Estate (Stack's, 5/59), lot 3505; Auction '80 (Paramount, 7/80), lot 956. (NGC ID# 28FG, PCGS# 8818)
