Description

1879 Ten Dollar, PR55
Only 10 to 12 Pieces Believed Known

1879 $10 PR55 NGC. The proof 1879 eagle is an extremely rare, underrated proof issue. It is possible that some of the just 30 coins minted were melted as unsold, contributing the issue's paltry survival of an estimated 10 to 12 coins in all grades, two of which are housed in the Smithsonian Institution and the American Numismatic Society. NGC and PCGS combined list 12 grading events, with the current Choice AU coin being the sole lowest-grade example known, an unrivaled opportunity for the budget-conscious collector to acquire a representative of this major proof gold rarity. Both sides show consistent olive-gold patina, with remnants of proof mirroring in the protected regions of the fields. Trivial friction leaves bold detail throughout each side. Census: 1 in 55, 1 finer (4/15).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28FH, PCGS# 8819, Greysheet# 9654)

Weight: 16.72 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
