Description
1882 Liberty Ten Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Only 12 to 14 Proofs Extant
A Top-Five Proof in Private Hands
1882 $10 JD-1, High R.6, PR65 Cameo NGC. A
circulation-strike mintage of more than 2.2 million pieces makes
the 1882 eagle relatively plentiful even in Mint State grades
thanks to numerous examples from European holdings. In proof
format, the the 1882 contrast could not be more pronounced. A
reported proof mintage of only 25 proofs yields between 12 to 14
examples according to John Dannreuther's research. He notes:"One can find examples of almost all Proof eagles with enough patience, but 1882 Proofs appear at auction infrequently so, when they sell, there is intense competition."
This Gem Cameo proof traces to RARCOA's Chicago Sale (8/1991), lot 832, as part of an 1882 gold proof set sold as individual lots. This eagle was the highlight of that set, prompting the cataloger to write:
"It has a few light hairlines and a mark on the chin but it still has the overall look of a 64 or better. Like the other coins in this set, it has a decided cameo appearance with a frosted head and eagle and deep mirror fields. The luster and brilliant yellow-gold color are full and original. The rarest denomination of the set, slightly more than the Half Eagle and also more rare than the famous and highly touted Double Eagle."
The vertical mark on Liberty's chin appears to be of planchet origin, yet it nonetheless serves as a useful identifier for earlier appearances that may exist for this exceedingly attractive and boldly contrasted proof. The flashy, smoothly mirrored fields indicate proper annealing of the planchet, allowing full appreciation of the fully struck, well-frosted motifs. Exemplary eye appeal exists throughout the Gem proof surfaces. NGC Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (3/26).(Registry values: P3)
