Gorgeous 1882 Ten, PR65 Cameo

1882 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. Just 40 proof eagles were minted in 1882, and most numismatic students believe that about 12 to 15 pieces survive today. Among the survivors are two pieces in the Smithsonian Institution, and one in the American Numismatic Society. In addition to those, we are aware of the Ed Trompeter coin, the Bass specimen, the Garrett coin, the Carter example, and the present piece from the 1959 ANA auction.
Auction records suggest that five or six additional pieces may exist. The finest that we have seen is a PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC coin, followed closely by this example and another PR65 Cameo coin. A complete Census would be a challenging but worthwhile project for someone to undertake. While new specimens still appear from time to time, such as the present piece that was hidden away for 50 years, enough information exists today that a complete roster of all proof gold coins is finally feasible.
This Gem Cameo proof has light yellow-gold surfaces. The fields are deeply mirrored with the watery appearance usually associated with 19th century proof gold coins. The devices have a high degree of frosty mint luster, and the sharp contrast between the fields and devices is remarkable. The obverse has four or five tiny lint marks. However, there are no copper spots, scratches, or other blemishes of note.
