Desirable 1885 Ten Dollar PR64 Deep Cameo

1885 $10 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. Ex: Bass/Garrett. The strike is bold and the devices heavily frosted with deeply mirrored fields exhibiting the orange peel texture often seen on proof coins of this period. From an original mintage of 65 pieces, it is estimated that less than two dozen pieces survive, this example being one of the finest. The only surface markers that might prove helpful in tracing the pedigree of this coin in the future is a tiny planchet void in the middle of a triangle described by star 3, star 4, and the tip of Liberty's nose, and a small contact mark at the end of the truncation of the bust. Population: 2 in 64 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (12/04).
Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 1611, where it realized $21,850. Earlier John Work Garrett Collection, Stack's (3/1976), lot 489, which realized $5,250. (#98825) (Registry values: P2)
