    Description

    1887 Ten Dollar, PR64
    Attractive Orange-Peel Texture
    Ex: Byron Reed

1887 $10 PR64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Byron Reed. Proof eagle production reached its highest point to date in 1887, when 80 specimens were struck. A similar level would not be achieved again until 1899. While Garrett and Guth explain that the high mintage was a direct response to actual collector demand, it seems few pieces were preserved in the long term. They write: "Why the survival rate is so low remains a mystery, but today the total population is less than 30 pieces."

Both sides exhibit the classic and highly sought-after orange-peel texture in the fields, which are deeply reflective. The devices are lightly frosted and contrast is evident, but no mention of it is made on the PCGS insert. A few wispy lines appear on the obverse, and there are no other signs of contact. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 2 in 64, 2 finer in this category. CAC: 2 in 64, 0 finer (1/18).
