Description

Rare 1887 Ten Dollar, PR65 Cameo
    Magnificent Eye Appeal

1887 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. Ex: Miller Collection. The original mintage for the 1887 ten dollar proof (80 pieces) was the highest it had been since proofs were first offered to the public in 1859. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth write in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933 (2006): "... the difference is that in 1859, the Mint struck 80 proofs in anticipation of demand, but in 1887, the Mint struck 80 proofs in response to increased demand from collectors. Why the survival rate is so low remains a mystery, but today the total population is less than 30 pieces."
Walter Breen estimates in his Encyclopedia (1988) that "possibly 15-20 survive." Examination of our records indicates that 1887 proof eagles have made 15 appearances at auction between 1974 and 2011. These include Cameos and Ultra/Deep Cameos as well as non-Cameo examples. NGC and PCGS have certified a total of 25 1887 proof eagles -- nine non-Cameos, 11 Cameos, and five Ultra/Deep Cameos.
The present Gem Cameo offering displays deep "gold-on-black" contrast on both sides; indeed, it appears to verge on Ultra Cameo. A solid strike imparted razor-sharp definition on the design features, further enhancing the coin's magnificent eye appeal. We mention tiny nicks on the eyebrow, forehead above, and the bridge of the nose solely for identification purposes
The above attributes synergistically result in overall eye appeal above and beyond the numerical Gem designation. Census: 6 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (4/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 3X72, PCGS# 88827)
