Description

1887 PR 65 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. One of 80 proofs of this date struck. Need we say that only a fraction of these survive, and Akers estimates that there are only 20-25 pieces extant? This is a very small number for a date thought to be the most common of the decade. "Common" takes on an entirely new meaning when discussing these rare proof gold coins. A nice orange peel color, as seen with many of these proof eagles, with frosty devices and deeply mirrored fields, gives this piece plentiful eye appeal. This coin is tied with one other PCGS graded coin for the finest certified. Population: 1 in 65, none are finer (11/98).
Ex: Amon Carter (Stack's, 1/84), lot 783.
