Description

1890 Proof Eagle, PR65 Deep Cameo
Strong Strike and Mirroring
Ex: Father Flanagan Boys Town Sale

1890 $10 JD-1, Low R.6, PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Gold devices float on intense deep black watery fields. The strike is excellent, save for some weakness hidden in the highest strands of hair. Overall eye appeal is exquisite, and not much hindered by the few wispy signs of contact that nonetheless preclude an even finer grade.

The mintage of proof eagles in 1890 is given as 63 pieces. While this figure is similar to many dates in the 1880s, its surviving population of about 25 examples makes it the first to appear with any level of frequency. Despite this more sizable population, only a few have achieved Gem status and also received the coveted Deep or Ultra Cameo designation. PCGS has listed one 65 and two 66s, and NGC has four 65s, five 66s, and one 66+ in its population report (3/25). Of course, this likely includes duplications.

This piece was formerly offered in Superior's Father Flanagan Boys Town Sale in 1990, where it realized $68,750. (The PCGS holder displays the misspelling "Flannagan.") At that time it was cataloged as:
"1890. Eagle. NGC graded Proof 65. Cameo. Delicate toning. Spectacular quality for a Proof Eagle, the cameo contrast being the strongest we have seen on one of these. This is the only Proof 1890 Eagle graded by NGC. Because of its Gem quality it is sure to bring a lofty premium."

Lots 5346 through 5349 were individual coins from a complete gold proof set, each certified PR65 Cameo by NGC and displaying similar delicate toning. This suggests that they were an original set, rather than one that was assembled afterward. Lot 5350 was an offering of the entire set, but the coins instead sold separately. We are unaware of any earlier provenance for this set.
