1894 $10 PR65 PCGS. The proof mintage for eagles in 1894 was a mere 43 pieces, the lowest figure since 1883 and a "floor" until the end of the series with no subsequent issue going lower. While resubmission trends interfere with any attempt to build an accurate census from population data, PCGS suggests "25 to 30 known" in any condition, indicating a survival rate of better than half the original output.

It is plain that the vast majority of unimpaired proof 1894 ten dollar gold coins show significant contrast between fields and devices. NGC and PCGS, when they certify proofs today, will give coins a Cameo designation, sometimes Ultra or Deep Cameo, when that is a particular example's due. In the early days, however, such designations were left off the grade labels, and even the best-contrasted proof in a first-generation PCGS holder will not call the coin a Deep Cameo.

However PCGS or another service would assess this example today, its frost-and-mirror effect is clear and beautiful. Light areas of milky patina near the date and at the top and right reverse settle on surfaces with rich yellow color and a narrow band of richer orange just inside the obverse rim. Pleasingly preserved fields have just a hint of classic "orange-peel" texture. The PCGS population information for non-Cameo coins is largely obsolete due to the introduction of Cameo and Deep Cameo grades, but it stands at: 3 in 65, 0 finer (11/13).
