Description

Rare 1895 Eagle, PR61 Cameo

1895 $10 PR61 Cameo PCGS. In only three years between 1866 and 1907 did the production of proof Liberty With Motto eagles exceed 100 coins. In fact, it was 1885 before the annual mintage of proof eagles topped 50 coins. Walter Breen (1988) estimated 18-20 survivors of proof 1895 tens from a mintage of 56 pieces. With that in mind, it is interesting to look at current certification totals. NGC and PCGS combined list a total of 47 proof submissions for the date, just nine coins shy of the total mintage. It would be a remarkable situation if in the last century nearly all of the original mintage survived, but multiple grading submissions is a more likely explanation. In any case, the strong appeal of 19th century proof gold coins is undeniable, and this is a fine example. There are no major abrasions or spots, but a close look reveals numerous hairlines. Sharply struck devices contrast nicely against mirrored fields, and the honey-gold surfaces display a trace of orange highlights. Population: 1 in 61 Cameo, 4 finer (8/08).
