Description

1896 Ten Dollar, PR64 Deep Cameo
Remarkable Reflectivity

1896 $10 JD-1, High R.5, PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. The Mint increased the eagle proof mintage in 1896 as the country continued to recover from the impact of the Financial Crisis of 1893. The 78 eagle proofs struck in 1896 have also survived well, and quality for this year is typically excellent. John Dannreuther estimates that over half of the 1896 proofs have survived, and combined figures from PCGS and NGC support this with a total of 45 pieces certified between the two services. Even so, the census is relatively small, and just 16 pieces are rated as Deep and Ultra Cameo (12/25).

This remarkable Choice proof is one of the scarce Deep Cameo examples available, sharply struck on smooth yellow-gold surfaces. The highly-mirrored fields and richly frosted devices yield effectively black-and-gold contrast for dynamic eye appeal. A thin series of tiny blemishes just off Liberty's lower lip and a minor copper spot on her neck serve as pedigree markers, and slight hairlines are revealed that account for the grade. This example is an ideal candidate for the collector searching for a 19th century proof eagle.
