Description

1896 Proof Eagle, PR65 Deep Cameo
Ex: Harry W. Bass Jr. Collection

1896 $10 JD-1, High R.5, PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Yellow-gold surfaces are contrasted with significant mirroring that is strongest in the largest fields and is interrupted slightly around the stars, date, and eagle's head. Weakness is nearly nonexistent. Several slight hairlines are present in the obverse fields, but consistent with the Gem grade, there are no distracting abrasions.

This year has the second highest proof eagle mintage to date with 78 examples, behind 1859 and 1887, which have 80 apiece. Survival rates were high as well, with Dannreuther estimating that half of the mintage survived, compared to one-quarter to one-third for dates in the 1880s. Quality for this year is also typically excellent. This makes this year a wonderful candidate for the collector searching for a 19th Century proof eagle.

Adding to this example's allure is the Harry Bass pedigree. Bass was a Texas oil magnate who created one of the finest collections of gold coins ever assembled. The Core Collection, which included the best examples, was displayed at the American Numismatic Association's headquarters from October 2000 until they were sold by us in four sessions in 2022 and 2023. These four sales had eight proof eagles between them, including an 1804 eagle, the finest known 1843 and 1859 eagles, and excellent examples of the 1894, 1900, and 1908 eagles. Most of the collection was sold in 1999 and 2000 in a four-part sale, with the majority of the proof eagles appearing in Part II. This remarkable offering included all dates of proof Liberty Head eagles from 1860 onwards, with the sole exception of the 1875 (although the extremely rare circulation strike was present). The present offering sold for $28,750 in that sale, and you now have the opportunity to add your name to the pedigree after Bass and the current consignor.
