    Remarkable 1896 Trompeter Proof Ten

1896 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. Of the 78 proofs struck in 1896, both Breen and Akers have estimated that perhaps only 20-25 pieces still exist today. Very scarce in choice and better grades, this sparkling coin has incredibly deep mirrors that provide a nearly black backdrop to the frosted golden devices seen on each side. There are some light, almost imperceptible hairlines in the fields. The only visual distractions we see are a couple of tiny contact marks to the left of the 11th star, and an almost invisible scratch from the border to the right of the 6 in the date vertically to Liberty's hair curl. A very impressive type coin and a beautiful example of the date. Population: 1 in PR 64, 4 finer (11/98).
