Rarely Encountered PR64 Cameo 1897 Ten Dollar
1897 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. One person has consigned to this auction what is effectively a gold proof set from 1897. The quarter eagle grades PR66 Ultra Cameo, the half eagle is PR64 Ultra Cameo, and the double eagle is certified as PR63 Cameo. All are NGC certified. We do not know if this is an original proof set that is being broken up or if the consignor assembled this set piece by piece. Either way, it presents other collectors with a remarkable opportunity to acquire proof examples of this very scarce year. The original mintage for the 1897 proof ten dollar was a paltry 69 pieces. Of that number, it is estimated (by Breen) that today only 35-40 examples are known. Again, like the quarter eagle and half eagle, we question if even that many coins are extant, and would estimate that probably only 20-25 pieces are known today in all grades. This coin meets the criteria set out in Breen's Comprehensive Encyclopedia for proofs of this date: "low date slanting up to right, light repunching on base of 1." The fields show the depth of mirrors one would expect from a proof, with light hairlines present over the orange-peel texture. The devices are nicely frosted and are set off in stark contrast against the unfathomable blackness seen in the fields. A rare opportunity. Population: 5 in 64, 0 finer (11/03).
