Magnificent 1897 Eagle PR65 Ultra Cameo
1897 $10 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. From a limited mintage for the 1897 proof eagle of a mere 69 pieces, attrition appears to have taken its toll on up to half of the original production. Even an estimate by Breen (whose survival figures were calculated years ago and are often found to be low) of only 35-40 survivors seems to hold up on this issue. Not that there could ever be any doubt about this spectacular coin's proof status, it does meet the criteria set out in Breen's Comprehensive Encyclopedia for proofs of this date: "low date slanting up to right, light repunching on base of 1."The standards for proof gold coinage appear to have reached their zenith during the closing years of the 20th century. This tendency is also borne out in the offerings of two spectacular 1898 four-piece gold proof sets appearing in this year's FUN Sale. The fields of this solid Gem representative exhibit glittering, glassy mirrors of unfathomable blackness that provide stark contrast with the heavily frosted design elements. One has to closely examine the fields under magnification to locate even the slightest post-minting disturbance. Two pinpoint planchet voids on the obverse are useful for attribution, one between stars 11 and 12 along with a more obvious one between Liberty's forecurl and star 5. Magnificent quality for this extremely challenging proof Liberty eagle. Census: 2 in 65, 2 finer (12/06).(Registry values: P1)
