Description

1900 Eagle, PR65 Cameo
Well-Contrasted, Early Die State

1900 $10 JD-1, Low R.5, PR65 Cameo NGC. Deep, mirrored surfaces contrast with rich, yellow-gold devices. Every last detail is fully defined and fully struck up. A small scratch extending northeast from the final 0 in the date serves as a pedigree marker, but it is not immediately noticeable, nor are there any other notable contact marks, as the Gem grade suggests.

The 1900 proof eagle comprises the highest mintage of the Liberty Head series in this format at 120 coins, and when extended to include the Indian Head series as well, it is second to the 1910. However, this "high" mintage is of course relative - there are still only 50 to 65 examples known, as attrition was higher among the larger proof gold denominations since collectors were more likely to spend them in the case of economic hardships like the Panic of 1907, of course due to their higher face value. Also, the lowest mintage circulation strike eagle of this era is the 1899-O, of which 37,047 were produced, a figure that is still 300 times larger than the 1900's proof mintage. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that while this issue is common in relation to other proofs, it is anything but common in absolute terms.

Further adding to the rarity of this issue is its exquisite state of preservation. The year 1900 is the high water mark of Cameo proofs before contrast was reduced in 1902, and this example certainly delivers. Its numerical grade also places it in the upper echelons of this issue, as NGC has only assigned higher grades five times, with PCGS having done so only once. Adding to the high levels of preservation is the example's early die state. As Dannreuther notes in his book on proof gold, these late-date proofs required lapping and repolishing in the middle of production to ensure strong Cameo contrast. On this year in particular, the relapping led to buildup in the shield, particularly at the top of the spaces between stripes. This is not present on this offering, providing the collector with a rare opportunity to obtain an early die state, fully-contrasted, Gem example of this issue.
