Description

1901 Liberty Eagle, PR65 Ultra Cameo
Final Year of Highly Contrasted Proofs
Only 85 Examples Struck

1901 $10 JD-1, Low R.5, PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Only 85 proof Liberty eagles were struck in 1901, down considerably from the 120 specimens minted the year before. The proofs were delivered in four batches throughout the year, with 38 examples delivered on March 26, 11 specimens on June 17, three coins on September 24, and a final delivery of 33 pieces on December 30. The first three batches were struck inside the Second Philadelphia Mint, but the final group was struck in the new medal room of the Third Philadelphia Mint, which was occupied in October of 1901. The new facility had more modern machinery, powered by electricity, and a new hydraulic coin press, but all the proofs were struck from the same pair of dies. This was the last year before the Mint switched to the all-brilliant finish for proof coins, which severely reduced the cameo contrast on proofs of that era.
Population data from the leading grading services has been severely inflated by resubmissions and crossovers, as NGC and PCGS have recorded 92 grading events between them, seven more than the number of coins minted (3/26). In United States Proof Coins, Volume IV, John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 40-55 examples in all grades today, an estimate that agrees well with the issue's frequency of appearance at auction. Three coins are included in institutional collections at the Smithsonian and ANS. PCGS also lists two specimens in impaired condition.
The present coin is a spectacular Gem proof, with well-preserved orange-gold surfaces and deeply reflective fields. The sharply detailed design elements are richly frosted and field/device contrast is stunning. Overall eye appeal is terrific. This coin will be a welcome addition to the finest collection or Registry Set. NGC Census: 3 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 1 finer (3/26).
