Seldom-Seen Gem Cameo Proof 1901 Ten Dollar1901 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. The recorded proof production was 85 pieces, with a little over half of those still surviving, although most survivors today fail to achieve the Gem level. The present Gem offers excellent eye appeal. The surfaces are well-contrasted, seemingly on the cusp of an Ultra Cameo designation. Orange-gold predominates, with tinges of hazel near the obverse rim. The strike is impeccable, as expected, and mentionable contact is absent.
NGC has only certified seven examples in Gem or finer grades with all designations, their Census including two PR65 Cameos, one PR65 Ultra Cameo, one PR66 Cameo, two PR66 Ultra Cameos, and one PR67 Cameo. PCGS has certified one example each in PR65 Cameo, PR65 Deep Cameo, PR66 Cameo, and PR66 Deep Cameo (9/11).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 28G8, PCGS# 88841)
